Trump Classified Documents Case Opens in May 2024, Becomes Target of Investigation

Trump is the first outgoing president in U.S. history to face federal criminal charges. The prosecutor handling this case asked the judge to start the trial in December this year, while Trump's defense lawyers requested that the trial be held after the election in November next year.

Trump's becomes the target of investigation.

Agence France-Presse reported that the trial in May next year will be held in the federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida, the United States, which is also a strong vote area for Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

The 77-year-old Trump is the most likely candidate for the Republican nomination, and the first court session happens to be near the end of the party's primary election.

The Republican National Convention (RNC) will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 to 18 next year, when the party's candidates will be formally nominated, but the state primaries will mostly be cleared before May 20 next year.

Judge Gannon announced yesterday that the choice to start the trial in May next year was to allow time for both parties to process more than 1.1 million pages of evidence, as well as the challenges brought about by handling the core confidential documents of the case during the trial.

Trump is also embroiled in other lawsuits. On July 18, he said he was told by special counsel Jack Smith that he was the target of a federal grand jury investigation to determine whether he was illegally trying to overturn the results of his 2020 re-election bid, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden.
